Ashaiman: The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has launched an initiative to clear approximately 40,000 cubic metres of waste from various locations within the municipality in an effort to enhance sanitation conditions.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Freeman Tsekpor, the Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), revealed the plan during an interview following an evacuation operation conducted at the Sakasaka Park area. This operation is part of the Assembly’s ongoing strategy to eliminate waste in the municipality. Similar cleanup activities have been carried out at Presby Junction, Ashaiman Main Market, Newtown Junction, and Sakasaka Park.
Mr. Tsekpor mentioned that a sanitation task force would be appointed to monitor the cleared areas to prevent illegal dumping. He warned that violators would face prosecution as a deterrent to others. He also highlighted the Assembly’s commitment to partnering with stakeholders within the sanitation industry to transform Ashaiman into a pristine city conducive to business and residential life.
Mr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, emphasized that sanitation is a priority for the area. He acknowledged the absence of a landfill site in Ashaiman but expressed his intention to attract private investors to set up recycling facilities. These facilities would not only manage waste but also create employment opportunities.
Mr. Norgbey further assured that discussions with the central government would persist to obtain additional waste containers. These containers would be strategically placed throughout the municipality to reduce littering.
The Ghana News Agency reported that the cleanup at Sakasaka Park included participation from ASHMA officials, the Ghana Red Cross Society, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and security personnel, among others.
