Asafotufiami Festival: Youth Cautioned Against Risky Sexual Behaviour

Ada: As this year's Asafotufiami Festival gathers momentum, young people within Ada have been urged to exercise caution and avoid behaviours that could expose them to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

According to Ghana News Agency, Naana Kakie, the Chief Executive Officer of the Naana Kakie Foundation and an HIV/AIDS prevention advocate, issued the caution in an interview ahead of the celebration. She warned that the festive atmosphere, often marked by reunions, alcohol and drug consumption, and heightened emotions, could lead to poor decision-making and risky sexual behaviours, including indulging in unprotected sex, which remains among the leading causes of new HIV infections.

'Deep kissing, unprotected sex, and the sharing of sharp objects are all risky during this period,' she said, adding that 'many people will reconnect with old flames or form new romantic links during the festivities, and under the influence of alcohol or drugs, their judgement may be impaired.'

Ms Kakie also expressed concern about the increasing reliance on contraceptives among young women as a substitute for full protection, saying it gives a false sense of safety. 'Contraceptives only prevent pregnancy; they do not protect against HIV or other STIs. Condoms do both,' she stressed.

She also addressed a popular excuse among some youth who say, 'I can't eat toffee in rubber,' describing such thinking as dangerous and misleading. 'If using a condom means I can enjoy myself and stay safe, so be it. Should I follow the sweetness and dig my own grave at a tender age?' she asked.

Naana Kakie further called on traditional authorities, including the Paramount Chief, Divisional Chiefs, and Queen Mothers, to clamp down on indecent dressing, which she said could heighten sexual temptations and increase the risk of exploitation. 'Cultural celebrations should not end in regret. Let us protect our youth and uphold the true values Asafotufiami stands for,' she added.

The Asafotufiami Festival, celebrated annually by the people of Ada, draws thousands of revellers from across Ghana and beyond. The 2025 edition, which marks the 88th celebration, is scheduled to run from Thursday, July 31, to Friday, August 8.
