Armyworm Infestation Ravages Over 50 Acres of Crops in Bolove-Nolopi Community

Abolove-nolopi: A devastating outbreak of armyworms has struck the Abolove-Nolopi community in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region. The infestation has destroyed over 50 acres of farm crops, leaving farmers reeling with many losing their entire harvests.

According to Ghana News Agency, the armyworms, known for their voracious appetites, have been feeding on crops such as maize, okra, tomatoes, and peppers, which were almost nearing maturity. The destruction has been so extensive that many of these crops have been completely destroyed. Mr. Godwin Emmanuel Gbekle, one of the affected farmers, expressed the significant impact of the armyworm devastation and the urgent need for solutions.

Mr. Gbekle highlighted that the farmers in Bolove-Nolopi primarily rely on these crops for their livelihoods and to feed their families. With the crops being destroyed, they are left without any source of income or food. The local food supply has also been affected, with the potential for a shortage of fresh produce in the area, likely driving up prices and making it difficult for residents to access healthy food.

Farmers in the area are appealing for help from government agencies and other stakeholders to provide necessary assistance, including pesticides and support on how to control the situation from spreading further in the municipality. Mr. Gbekle emphasized the urgency for stakeholders, philanthropists, corporate organizations, and the government to take immediate action to address the situation and enable farmers to recover.

Other farmers, as reported by the GNA, also lamented the psychological impact of the infestation, as many have lost their livelihoods and are struggling to cope with the loss. They stressed the importance of effective pest management and the need for access to tools and resources to control infestations. There is hope that with the right support, farmers in the Abolove-Nolopi community and beyond will be able to recover and restore their crops.

The situation has required urgent attention, and it is crucial for stakeholders to act immediately to mitigate the economic and emotional challenges faced by the farmers. The GNA also reported that many rice farmers in the area are appealing for a combined harvester machine to help harvest and process their products more efficiently.
