AppCyclers Launches Northern Ghana Plastic Waste Reboot Initiative to Combat Pollution and Empower Women

Tamale: AppCyclers, an indigenous social enterprise, has launched the Northern Ghana Plastic Waste Reboot Initiative to tackle plastic pollution and promote sustainable livelihoods. It is aimed at improving plastic waste collection and recycling across the northern part of the country.

According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative is supported by TRANSFORM, a global impact accelerator spearheaded by Unilever, the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and EY. Mr Agudor Agabas, Chief Executive Officer of AppCyclers, in a statement after the launch in Tamale, said the initiative sought to create a scalable, tech-driven model that fostered environmental sustainability while empowering women and marginalised waste workers in the region.

The statement said, "Through the Northern Ghana Plastic Waste Reboot Initiative, AppCyclers is pioneering a circular economy approach where plastic waste is not only diverted from landfills but also processed into reusable raw materials like flakes and pellets. These are then sold to local manufacturers, transforming waste into new products and new value."

It said the project would focus on three primary objectives, including diverting over 1,800 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills to significantly reduce environmental pollution, empower 100 female informal waste workers by equipping them with training, protective gear, and economic opportunities to improve their lives and work conditions, and deploying a digital platform to enhance traceability and transparency in waste collection efforts.
