Amenfi Central MP and DCE Unite to Tackle Illegal Mining

Amenfi Central: Mrs Juana Gyan Cudjoe, the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, together with Mr Peter Amponsah, the District Chief Executive (DCE), convened a critical meeting with stakeholders to address the rampant illegal mining activities, known locally as "galamsey," within the district.

According to Ghana News Agency, the meeting aimed to evaluate the current mining landscape and strategize on effective measures to combat galamsey and its associated challenges. The event saw participation from various stakeholders, including small-scale miners, gold buyers, excavator operators, and other relevant parties involved in the mining process.

Mr Amponsah, in his welcoming remarks, emphasized the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue and orientation, highlighting the collective responsibility of all parties within the mining value chain to address this pressing national issue.

Mr Mustapha Gbangde, the Deputy Operations Director at the Presidency, outlined the government's stringent measures against illegal mining, which has been a major contributor to environmental degradation. He stressed the severe threat posed by such activities to the environment and water bodies and called for the involvement of traditional rulers, religious groups, youth groups, and other stakeholders to support the government's efforts.

Mr Joseph Yamin, the NDC National Organiser, mentioned that the government is reviewing existing mining laws and regulations to rectify deficiencies that enable illegal mining. He noted the emphasis on ensuring miners undergo necessary training and obtain legal licenses to facilitate effective monitoring and impose stricter penalties on violators.

Mrs Juana Gyan Cudjoe assured her constituents of a comprehensive awareness campaign by the government to educate community members on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of illegal mining. She also announced the establishment of an office dedicated to addressing illegal mining issues in the district, reaffirming her commitment to the development of the area and expressing gratitude for the trust placed in her by the community.
