Accra: ActionAid Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation and advocate of women's rights, has called on Parliament to ensure that government allocates funds for the implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Act 2024. The organisation emphasized that budgetary allocation for the law's provisions would help bridge the gender equity gap.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Shevera Anzagira, the Greater Accra and Volta Regional Programmes Manager of ActionAid Ghana, made this appeal to commemorate International Women's Day on March 8. She voiced the organisation's concerns during a manifesto launch by the Young Urban Women Movement, an initiative of ActionAid Ghana.
Madam Anzagira highlighted that the theme for this year's celebration, 'Accelerate Action,' aligns with ongoing demands for increased commitment to gender equality. While the passage of the law was a positive step, she stressed that it was insufficient without financial resources to support its implementation. She urged Parliament to ensure the law is executed as intended, with necessary budget provisions.
Additionally, Madam Amanda Odoi, a Gender Advocate, suggested that Ghanaian leaders should eliminate barriers that hinder women's potential in various settings, including workplaces, homes, and communities. She advocated for resources to be made accessible to women to enhance their role in societal development.
