Tarkwa: A galamsey operator, who allegedly raped an elderly woman, has been remanded by the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court into police custody due to ongoing police investigations. The accused, Vitus Nsore, 24, is expected to appear before the court again on March 21, 2025. His plea has not been taken.

According to Ghana News Agency, Police Sergeant Douglas Addae, who led the prosecution, informed the court presided over by Mr. Charles Owusu Nsiah that the complainant is a 56-year-old farmer residing in Amoanda with her family and Nsore. On February 9, this year, around 0100 hours, the complainant was asleep in her room. Due to a heavy downpour, the entire community experienced a blackout, plunging it into darkness.

The prosecution stated that Nsore took advantage of the blackout, entered the complainant’s room quietly, and violently attacked her. He subjected her to torture, beatings, and forcibly had unprotected sex with her while covering her mouth with his hand.

Sergeant Addae reported that after Nsore satisfied himself, he intended to kill the complainant to conceal his actions. He locked her in the room, threatening to return with a knife. However, the complainant, despite being weak and helpless, managed to escape through the window and shouted for help.

The prosecution explained that one Anthony Kwofie and the complainant’s children came to her aid and searched for the accused person, but were initially unsuccessful. Nsore was later apprehended by the complainant’s children with the help of concerned citizens of Amoanda and handed over to the Huni-Valley Police. The complainant had already reported the matter there, leading to Nsore’s re-arrest and detention.

Sergeant Addae added that the accused was subsequently taken to the Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) Office for investigation. A medical report form was issued to the complainant for hospital treatment and reporting. The complainant later returned the form to the police, endorsed by a medical officer at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.
