Africa Urged to Boost Digital Infrastructure Investment for Development: Mupita

Accra: Mr. Ralph Mupita, the Group President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN, has emphasized the importance of Africa increasing its investment in digital infrastructure as a means to ensure growth and socio-economic development. He highlighted the critical role of technologies like 5G, non-terrestrial networks, and generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) as future drivers of progress.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mupita, during a media interaction in Accra, underscored the necessity for Africa to refine its infrastructural policies to avoid lagging in the digital era. The meeting, part of the 'MTN Bright Conversations' series, showcased the company's commitment to leading Africa's digital transformation.

MTN is actively collaborating with policymakers and stakeholders to establish a local ecosystem that balances relevance, global competitiveness, and sustainable investment. Mr. Mupita pointed out the essential need for fiscal policy reforms, adequate spectrum resources, reliable power supply, and digital skills development to foster the digital economy's structural growth.

He asserted, "At MTN, we believe that these foundational policy positions, consistently adopted across the continent, have the power to drive structural growth of the digital economy, and realise the continent's full potential as we look to achieve the goals of the AU Agenda 2063 and beyond."

Looking beyond 'Ambition 2025', Mr. Mupita stated that MTN's strategic vision is rooted in harnessing growth within digital connectivity, fintech, and digital infrastructure. This focus aligns with Africa's digital transformation needs and positions MTN to support socio-economic development through technological advancements.

Currently serving nearly 300 million customers, MTN stands as Africa's largest telecom operator and one of the world's leading telecom companies outside China and India. Mr. Mupita emphasized MTN's mission: "Our work is about empowering people to build a better life for themselves and their loved ones. We simply leverage technology to deliver opportunities."

Reflecting on MTN's performance in the first half of 2025, Mr. Mupita reported a 4.7 percent increase in subscribers across Africa, with notable growth in mobile money users, data, and digital services. He credited Ghana as a significant contributor to this success, acknowledging the critical role played by MTN Ghana in achieving these results.
