Advocacy Group Urges Ghana to Strengthen Inclusive Policies for Persons with Disabilities.

Kumasi: The Advocacy for Children Living with Developmental Disabilities (ACLiDD) - Ghana, a local non-governmental organization, has urged the implementation of inclusive socio-economic policies to incentivize the employment of qualified Persons living with Disabilities (PWDs) in leadership roles.According to Ghana News Agency, ACLiDD stresses that leadership should be defined not by physical ability but by the competency, vision, passion, and determination of individuals. A statement from Mr. Emmanuel Kumi, Programmes Manager of ACLiDD, issued in Kumasi to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, highlighted that while Ghana's Persons with Disability Act (2006) mandates a quota for disabled representation in government institutions, its enforcement has been inconsistent. The statement emphasized the necessity for stronger monitoring mechanisms to ensure the full application of the law, providing PWDs with the opportunities they deserve. It noted that the underrepresentation of PWDs in leadership roles is not only a fairness issue but also a missed opportunity for Ghana to harness the vast potential of PWDs.The statement further elaborated on the importance of nurturing future leaders among PWDs through a multifaceted approach, which includes inclusive education, mentorship, accessible infrastructure, and empowerment. Despite the introduction of the Inclusive Education Policy, many children with disabilities face challenges in school enrollment, especially in institutions inadequately equipped to meet their needs. Additionally, insufficient teacher training in inclusive education hinders students with disabilities from receiving appropriate classroom support. The statement pointed out that this situation not only deprives Ghana of the talents and potential of a significant population segment but also stifles the growth of a truly inclusive society. The Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, along with other advocacy groups, has consistently called for intensified efforts t o dismantle barriers that prevent PWDs from accessing leadership opportunities and contributing to national development. The statement concluded by urging the implementation of more initiatives to recognize the potential of PWDs, encouraging and creating spaces for them to thrive as leaders within their communities and fields of expertise. Since its inception, ACLiDD-Ghana has been dedicated to raising awareness about stigma and its detrimental effects on the development of PWDs through community and public engagements. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on December 3, is a United Nations designated day aimed at raising awareness about disability issues and promoting the inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in all life aspects. This year's theme was 'Amplifying Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.'
