Ada East to Launch House-to-House Waste Collection Initiative

Ada East: Mr. Frank Opoku Abimah, the Ada East District Environment Health Officer, has announced the department's plan to introduce a house-to-house waste collection service to tackle sanitation challenges in the district. The initiative aims to improve waste management by utilizing tricycles for waste collection directly from residents' homes.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Abimah expressed concern over the current poor sanitation practices within the community. He highlighted issues such as residents dumping waste on the ground when containers are full or unavailable, and children being unable to reach the height of waste containers, leading to improper disposal of refuse.

Mr. Abimah emphasized the importance of integrating good sanitation practices into daily life rather than relying solely on waste management companies like Zoomlion. The new waste collection program is expected to address these sanitation issues, with plans to enforce sanitation by-laws as part of the initiative.

He explained that residents would hand over their waste to the tricycle operators for a small fee to cover fuel costs. The existing waste containers in the communities will be replaced with 'borla taxis,' and the initiative is scheduled to begin by mid-year.

Furthermore, Mr. Abimah warned residents against dumping waste and empty plastic containers on roads and in gutters, noting that the government is implementing regulations to penalize such behaviors. He mentioned that some residents are currently being prosecuted for various sanitation offenses, with some already fined and others undergoing trial in court.
