Accra Golden Lions Club Donates Life Jackets to Enhance Safety for Students Crossing Volta Lake

Accra: The Accra Golden Lions Club has made a significant contribution to the safety of students at Pediatorkorpe D/A Basic School by donating 25 life jackets. These jackets are intended for students who must cross the Volta Lake to access education on the mainland.

According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative, known as the 'Save the Kids Project,' addresses a crucial need for safety among students who navigate the river daily. The project aims to ensure that children do not have to risk their lives to pursue basic education, aligning with the Lions Club's global impact strategy.

Mr. Sampson Wolanyo Deklu, President of the Accra Golden Lions Club, emphasized that this project is a high-priority activity for their 2024-2025 service year. The initiative is part of their commitment to youth empowerment, which is one of their eight global thematic areas. Other areas of focus include Childhood Cancer, Hunger, Environment, Diabetes, Disaster Relief, and Youth.

Mr. David Tetteh Paa Nii Numo, headmaster of the Pediatorkorpe D/A Basic School, expressed profound gratitude for the donation. He noted that it provides much-needed relief, particularly during events like sports programs and the BECE, which require students to cross the river. The headmaster explained that the life jackets would significantly enhance safety and give students the confidence to cross without fear.

Mr. Numo reported that there have been no fatalities related to students crossing the river, a fact for which they are grateful. He also highlighted the school's ongoing challenges, including shortages of textbooks, exercise books, footwear, and uniforms. Teachers often step in to provide these essentials.

The headmaster called on NGOs, the government, corporate bodies, and individuals for further support. The school's current enrollment stands at 378 students, underscoring the scale of need and potential impact of additional assistance.
