Work-and-Pay Driver Remanded for Allegedly Stealing High-Value Vehicle

Dansoman: The Dansoman Circuit Court has ordered the remand of a 33-year-old driver, Anthony Atsu Godbless, who stands accused of stealing a vehicle valued at GHS240,000. Godbless faces multiple charges, including attempting to commit crime, stealing, and causing unlawful damage. While he pleaded guilty to causing unlawful damage, he denied the charges of attempting to commit crime and stealing.

According to Ghana News Agency, Presiding Judge Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit accepted Godbless's guilty plea for the charge of causing unlawful damage, ruling that his explanation was consistent with the plea. Consequently, the judge entered the plea and decided to remand Godbless into police custody. The judge also instructed the prosecution to file disclosures and witness statements for a case management conference related to the remaining charges. The case has been adjourned to July 16, 2025.

Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko, prosecuting, provided further details about the case. The complainant, Mr. Joshua Agbenorhevi, who is the General Manager of Drive Track Limited, resides in Dansoman, while Godbless resides in Kasoa. The two entered into a work-and-pay agreement in November 2024, under which Godbless took possession of a Nissan Note saloon car, valued at GHS240,000, to be paid over 51 months.

Godbless used the vehicle until June 30, 2025, when Agbenorhevi discovered that the car's tracking device had been disabled. Efforts to locate the vehicle and contact Godbless were unsuccessful. The incident was reported to the Dansoman Police on June 28, 2025. Intelligence later revealed that Godbless allegedly intended to cross into Togo to sell the vehicle. He negotiated with two undercover police officers to sell the car for GHS80,000, leading to his arrest with assistance from the Aflao Police. The vehicle was subsequently recovered, and an inspection revealed damage to the tracking device.
