Takoradi: The Western Regional Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has launched an extensive road safety awareness campaign in anticipation of the busy Christmas travel period. The initiative aims to mitigate road accidents during a time when travel across the country typically increases.According to Ghana News Agency, the campaign, themed 'Safe Travels During Christmas: The Role of GPRTU in Ensuring Passenger Safety', was launched at the Takoradi-Cape Coast Bus Terminal. Mr. Joseph Simmons Cudjoe, the GPRTU Western Regional Chairman, emphasized the campaign's focus on fostering a culture of mutual responsibility among drivers, passengers, and regulatory bodies to enhance travel safety.Mr. Cudjoe highlighted the pressing need for the campaign due to the rising number of road accidents in the region. He stated, "Awareness and training have become essential, especially with the holiday season and elections just around the corner." He also advised against politically charged conversation s on public transport during this period, as they could distract drivers.Mr. Victor Kojo Bilson, Western Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), praised the GPRTU's leadership for the initiative. He noted that public education is crucial in reducing road accidents and committed to continued collaboration with transport unions for public sensitization efforts.Drivers attending the event expressed appreciation for the road safety education, noting improvements in their understanding of safe driving practices. The campaign is set to expand to all GPRTU district terminals in the Western Region, including Nzema, Wassa, Bogoso-Asanco, and Ahanta, with training sessions aimed at both drivers and passengers to ensure widespread adoption of safety protocols.
