Western north: The Western North Regional Branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has committed to supporting the government in its efforts to combat illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, and illegal logging in the region's forest reserves.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Michael Aidoo, the Western North Regional Chairman for NDC, made this announcement during a press conference. He highlighted that illegal mining in certain districts has become a significant environmental concern, requiring collective effort to address. Mr. Aidoo emphasized that past efforts were often disorganized and ineffective, but under President John Dramani Mahama's administration, a strategic approach has been adopted to protect land and water resources while providing alternative livelihoods for those affected.
Mr. Aidoo dismissed claims involving Suaman District Chief Executive Vasco Obour in illegal mining activities as propaganda and false allegations, based on multiple investigations. He reiterated the government's focus on fulfilling its promises to Ghanaians, which include infrastructure development, job creation, and structured efforts to combat illegal mining.
He called upon traditional authorities, the media, and other stakeholders in the region to collaborate with the government in addressing the illegal mining issue. Mr. Aidoo also expressed gratitude to various stakeholders and residents for their support during President Mahama's Thank You Tour of the region.
