Volta Youths in Agriculture Applaud Mahama’s Coconut Seedling Distribution Initiative

Accra: The Volta Youth in Agriculture (VYA) has expressed their commendation to President John Dramani Mahama for the initiative to distribute 3 million coconut seedlings to coconut farmers across the country. This move has been welcomed by the group, who believe it will provide opportunities for coconut farmers to enhance their livelihoods and contribute to the agricultural sector's growth and sustainability.

According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Joy Mawutor Fiamawle, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Association, highlighted that the initiative would significantly impact the livelihoods of coconut farmers. She noted that with about 700 coconuts already on their farm in the region, the distribution of 3 million coconut seedlings would boost the sector and provide a substantial harvest for the nation.

Madam Fiamawle emphasized that the VYA is determined to continue their agricultural journey with unity and support, aiming to sow seeds of progress and achieve a successful harvest for the region and the nation. She called on the government to support and build on the initiative to ensure its successful implementation and sustainability, encouraging other stakeholders to join in supporting Ghana's agricultural development.

The VYA, with about 166 members consisting of business-oriented personnel, agro-chemists, and experienced farmers, hopes the initiative will significantly contribute to the agricultural sector's growth and sustainability in the region. The provision of coconut seedlings is expected to improve farmers' livelihoods and increase the country's coconut production.

Madam Fiamawle pointed out the strategic location of the association's farm at Tokorkoe in the Volta Region, which provides easy access for farmers and proximity to the regional capital Ho, facilitating the purchase of seedlings and support from VYA members. She also mentioned plans to establish coconut farms in various districts in the region in the coming years and commended farmers at Anlo-Afiadenyigba in the Keta municipality for offering quality coconut seedlings for sale.

The Volta Youths in Agriculture association comprises young individual farmers committed to seeing their communities and the nation thrive through agriculture. The government's initiative has brought hope to the group members, who are eager to work together to ensure its success. The successful implementation of the free coconut seedlings distribution will require support from all stakeholders, including farmers and industry players, to foster commitment and collaboration for the initiative's success.
