Volta Regional Health Director Advocates for Maintenance Culture in Hospitals

Keta: Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dordo, the Volta Regional Health Director, has called on hospitals and health centers throughout the region and the entire country to embrace a culture of proper maintenance to enhance healthcare delivery. He emphasized that this approach would ensure that medical facilities remain well-equipped to deliver quality services to the public.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Dordo made these remarks during the opening of a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Keta Municipal Hospital. He stressed the importance of a maintenance culture in preventing equipment failure, minimizing downtime, and maintaining safe and hygienic medical environments for patients. He encouraged hospital staff to prioritize regular equipment inspections and maintenance tasks to address potential issues promptly and prevent unforeseen challenges.

Dr. Dordo highlighted that adopting a maintenance culture could improve patient safety, increase efficiency, enhance the quality of healthcare, and reduce the costs associated with replacing equipment. He assured that the regional health directorate would address other pressing challenges at the Keta Municipal Hospital, such as the need for specialized staff, critical care nurses, general nurses, pharmacists, and biomedical scientists.

The hospital has requested essential ICU equipment, including patient monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, defibrillators, and advanced imaging units, while also emphasizing the importance of specialized training and ongoing support for staff development.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, some hospital staff urged clients and families to utilize the facilities, promising to provide the necessary care and expertise during medical crises. They expressed their aspiration for the ICU to evolve into a fully-fledged secondary level referral facility for southern Volta and appealed for additional resources from the regional health directorate and the Ghana Health Service.
