Accra: The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and the Ho Municipal Assembly organized a solemn vigil at Nfojoh Park in Ho to honor eight distinguished Ghanaians who lost their lives in a recent helicopter crash.
According to Ghana News Agency, the helicopter crash claimed the lives of all eight individuals on board, including Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, former Minister of Defence, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology. The candlelight ceremony was part of nationwide memorial activities to honor the memory of the deceased and to provide spiritual support to their bereaved families.
The event was attended by government officials, security services, traditional leaders, clergy, political party representatives, and community members, all united in grief. Mr. Stephen Adom, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ho, welcomed the mourners, describing the occasion as a 'painful but necessary gathering,' and urged the public to pray for all government appointees.
Mr. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, emphasized the nationwide impact of the tragedy and highlighted the significant contributions of the deceased to national development, particularly noting the work of Dr. Omane Boamah.
Reverend Seth Mawutor, Volta Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, offered words of comfort, encouraging residents not to lose faith and to trust in God's plan. Additionally, Mr. Mawutor Agbavitor, Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed the party's deep grief and encouraged learning from the sacrifices of the deceased.
Eulogies for Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Murtala Muhammed were delivered by Mr. Edem Kofi Kpotosu, Ho Central MP, and Mr. Kofi Attoh, former Ho Central MP, highlighting their dedication to education and parliamentary service.
Lt. Col. Jalali Din Ibrahim, Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho, reminded attendees of God's sovereignty, urging continuous prayers for the departed. Togbe Adawusa Sakrafu, speaking for the President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, expressed deep sorrow and encouraged government leaders to remain steadfast.
Music from the Army Band, Police Band, Israel Mawueta's ensemble, and the Glorious Choir added to the solemn atmosphere, moving mourners to tears. Wreaths were laid by representatives of various institutions and communities, symbolizing collective grief and respect for the fallen.
The vigil concluded with prayers and a moment of silence, reflecting on the legacies of the eight gallant Ghanaians who served their country with distinction.
