Accra: The Volta Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has extended its deepest condolences to the family of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the former First Lady of the Republic of Ghana. A team of party executives, including some District and Municipal Chief executives led by Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, joined the party's General Secretary, Mr Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, and other high-ranking officials to pay a visit to the bereaved family in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, during the visit, the team expressed their heartfelt sympathies and described Nana Konadu as a symbol of strength and a champion for women's rights throughout her life. The late former First Lady was also remembered for her commitment to empowering women in Ghana, contributing significantly to the country's progress.
The NDC highlighted Nana Konadu's role as a compassionate leader who demonstrated patriotism, selflessness, and dedication to women's empowerment. Her passing is viewed as a significant loss to the nation. She was a pivotal figure in the June 4th Revolutionary government and later founded the 31st December Women's Movement to further women's empowerment in Ghana.
Nana Konadu also made history as the first woman to run for president of Ghana in the 2016 election under the National Democratic Party, which she formed. Born on November 17, 1948, she was not only the longest-serving former First Lady but also a key figure in Ghanaian politics, playing a vital role in the country's democratic journey alongside her late husband, Jerry John Rawlings.
Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra on Thursday, October 23, at the age of 76 after a short illness. She is survived by four adult children, including Dr. Zanetor, Member of Parliament for the Klottey-Korle constituency.
