Volta GPRTU Supports Reintroduction of Road Tolls

Accra: The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed its support for the proposal from the new Mahama-led government to reintroduce road tolls. The GPRTU views the move as beneficial for generating significant revenue to fund road maintenance, construction, and improvement projects.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Awilo Attito, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer for GPRTU, stated in an interview that the association is prepared for the road tolls to return. He highlighted that the tolls could create employment opportunities and income for various individuals. Mr. Attito emphasized the importance of utilizing the revenue generated from the tolls for maintaining and repairing roads to ensure the safety of road users.

He further explained that previously, road tolls played a role in managing traffic flow by discouraging unnecessary trips, which helped reduce congestion and prevent accidents. The GPRTU urged the government to allocate funds from the tolls towards safety initiatives such as installing speed cameras, improving road lighting, and enhancing emergency response services.

The Union also called for transparency, suggesting that the government should provide annual accounts of the toll revenue utilization. Mr. Attito mentioned plans to engage with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to educate drivers' unions and other road users before implementing the tolls.

He appealed to drivers to support the government's reintroduction of road tolls and adhere to road regulations to avoid penalties. He also stressed the need for governmental engagement with driver unions regarding fuel price adjustments to facilitate appropriate fare changes.

Additionally, Mr. Attito urged drivers to maintain professionalism, especially around the upcoming Valentine's Day, to ensure road safety. Drivers from Keta echoed satisfaction with the toll reintroduction plan, urging the government to use the revenue to improve poor roads and address other critical issues for public benefit.
