Vatican City: The Vatican has issued new guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing the potential negative effects of this rapidly advancing technology. The guidelines caution against the possible misuse of AI, which could lead to deceptive practices and societal harm.
According to Ghana News Agency, the newly published document acknowledges AI's potential to contribute positively to society but warns of the associated risks. It highlights the technology's capability to generate manipulated content and misinformation, which can mislead individuals due to its similarity to the truth. This manipulation, the document notes, can be used to deceive or cause harm, posing a threat to societal foundations through AI-generated fake media.
The guidelines, titled 'Antiqua et Nova' (Old and New), call on governments and international organizations to ensure AI is used for the benefit of all. They stress the need for careful regulation to prevent the unintentional spread of misinformation, which can fuel political polarization and social unrest.
Additionally, the Vatican warns against relinquishing human responsibility to AI. The guidelines emphasize the importance of moral evaluation in determining how AI is directed and used, considering human freedom and the potential to choose harmful actions.
