Mr Musah, in his acceptance speech, emphasized that the award is not just a personal achievement but a collective milestone for everyone involved in advancing tobacco control and public health in Ghana, Africa, and globally. He acknowledged the efforts of civil society organizations, public health advocates, youth leaders, researchers, journalists, and community figures who have played a role in policy engagement and resistance against industry interference.
Mr Musah expressed his gratitude to God and acknowledged the support from the WHO Country representative in Ghana. He extended his thanks to individuals, institutions, and his family for their support and contributions towards the vision of VAST-Ghana.
He highlighted some accomplishments of VAST-Ghana, including advocating for the passage and implementation of Ghana's Tobacco Control Measures and Regulations in 2012 and 2016. The organization has also been instrumental in pushing for increased taxes on harmful tobacco products and participating in global platforms to amplify African voices and secure commitments for healthier societies.
Mr Musah noted the ongoing challenges posed by the tobacco industry, which continues to adapt its strategies to target youth and vulnerable populations. He emphasized the need for renewed resolve in combating these tactics and highlighted the award as a call to action for the government to accelerate the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and increase tobacco taxes to discourage consumption.
He urged the government to protect children from aggressive marketing by the tobacco industry, enforce stronger laws, and hold the industry accountable for its harmful impacts. Mr Musah called for unity and determination to create a tobacco-free future for Ghana, Africa, and the world.
