ACCRA: A civil society organization, the Vision for Accelerated Sustainable Development (VASD), has called upon road safety agencies in Ghana to strengthen the enforcement of traffic laws during the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities. This appeal aims to curb reckless driving and enhance safety on the roads during the high-risk holiday period.According to Ghana News Agency, VASD emphasized the need for the National Road Safety Authority, the Motor Traffic Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, and other agencies to intensify the enforcement of existing traffic laws, particularly regarding speeding and seatbelt use. The organization suggested that regular roadside checks and increased penalties for violations could deter dangerous driving practices. The VASD statement, signed by Executive Director Mr. Labram Musah, also highlighted the importance of improving road infrastructure, such as repairing potholes, enhancing road markings, and upgrading traffic management systems. Between Januar y and September 2024, Ghana recorded over 1,800 road fatalities, an 8.35 percent increase from the previous year. The statement further referenced a World Health Organization (WHO) analysis, which identified road traffic injuries as the leading cause of death for individuals aged 15-29. This loss of productive citizens, it noted, poses a significant challenge to national development, costing Ghana billions annually in healthcare expenses, loss of human capital, and property damage.VASD also pointed out that the festive season, often referred to as "Detty December," heightens the risk of accidents due to increased social and political activities, leading to risky driving behaviors. The statement underscored the strain on Ghana's healthcare system during this period, as facilities struggle to manage the influx of road accident victims.Driving under the influence of alcohol was highlighted as a major factor in road accidents. The statement called for public awareness campaigns focusing on the dangers of dru nk driving and urged engagement with various community groups to promote safer behaviors. The statement also urged passengers to play an active role in ensuring road safety by holding drivers accountable for irresponsible behaviors and reporting misconduct to authorities. VASD stressed that road safety is a collective responsibility and that prioritizing safety on the roads can lead to a safer festive season for all.
