ACCRA: The United States has officially congratulated President-elect John Mahama following his victory in Ghana's recent election, highlighting the country's commitment to democratic principles.According to Ghana News Agency, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken issued a statement extending congratulations to both President-elect Mahama and Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. Opoku-Agyemang has made history as Ghana's first female vice president. The statement also commended Ghana's Electoral Commission, electoral workers, civil society, and security agencies for facilitating a peaceful and transparent election process.The U.S. acknowledged outgoing Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his acceptance of the election results, underscoring the importance of graciousness in democratic transitions. The statement, however, noted reports of isolated violence during the elections, resulting in at least four confirmed deaths.
