Unifor Canada Supports School Clubs to Combat Child Labour in Cocoa Communities

Nkrankwanta: Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, is backing the creation of school-based clubs aimed at eliminating child labour in cocoa-growing communities within the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region. These clubs focus on advocacy against child exploitation through interactive sessions on child rights, dignity, and the importance of education.

According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Hariaya Bala, Project Coordinator of the Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), emphasized the significance of the initiative as part of Unifor Canada's 'Rights for Cocoa Project'. In a recent interview, she highlighted the collaborative approach with GloMeF to address child labour issues in these communities.

Madam Bala explained that GloMeF, a human rights, anti-corruption, and media advocacy organization, is implementing the project funded by Unifor Canada. The initiative involves school authorities in electing club executives, fostering leadership and ownership in combating child labour.

She emphasized the community-driven nature of the clubs, stating, "The creation of these clubs represents a powerful community-driven approach to tackle child labour at the root," and stressed the importance of beginning the fight against child labour in classrooms.

Madam Bala pointed out that when children understand their rights and the value of education, they can become influential advocates for change in their communities. The project aims to establish five school-based clubs in the district, empowering students to lead discussions, raise awareness, and inspire peers to work towards eradicating child exploitation.

Furthermore, the initiative underscores GloMeF's commitment to promoting child rights, education, and sustainable cocoa production, ensuring that every child grows up in a community where they are protected and able to reach their full potential.
