U.S. Embassy Pledges Enhanced Services, Zero Tolerance for Illegal Immigration

Accra: The United States Embassy in Accra has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering improved consular services while maintaining strict compliance with U.S. immigration laws. The Embassy stated it would continue to offer efficient services while serving as a defense against visa fraud and illegal immigration.

According to Ghana News Agency, the announcement was made during the inaugural Consular Media Day at the U.S. Embassy, where journalists were given a tour of the Consular Section and shown how visas, passports, and other consular services are processed. The event, led by Mr. Elliot C. Fertik, Consul General, and Mr. Mathew Asada, Press Attach©, aimed to dispel myths, clarify procedures, and promote lawful travel between Ghana and the United States.

Consular officials reiterated that while the U.S. welcomes Ghanaian visitors for study, work, investment, and tourism, adherence to immigration laws is crucial. Mr. Elliot Fertik highlighted the Embassy's priority to enhance customer service while ensuring the safety of American citizens and lawful travel for Ghanaian applicants.

Mr. Fertik discussed improvements made to consular facilities to create a transparent experience for visa applicants. He emphasized the U.S. Department of State's efforts to support legitimate travelers and combat fraud and illegal immigration.

In 2024, the U.S. Embassy in Accra processed over 61,000 non-immigrant visa applications, issued 25,000 visas, and conducted 1,600 fraud investigations. It also processed 8,300 immigrant visas, 3,450 U.S. passports, and 1,100 Consular Reports of Births Abroad.

Mr. Fertik stressed the importance of following immigration laws, warning that illegal activities like overstaying visas or providing false information could lead to serious consequences, including visa refusal or deportation.

The Embassy advises against using third-party agents, encouraging applicants to independently book appointments or seek help from trusted sources. It warns that fraudulent documents or misuse of a visa could result in a lifetime ban from entering the United States.

The Consul General noted the Trump Administration's commitment to enforcing immigration laws, stating that those convicted of crimes could expect deportation. The Embassy operates a spacious consular waiting area, accommodating 150 applicants to facilitate a seamless visa application process.
