Accra: The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called upon the government, political parties, the Electoral Commission (EC), and all stakeholders to collaborate effectively to guarantee free, fair, and peaceful elections on December 7, 2024. The appeal comes as political tensions rise with the elections approaching.According to Ghana News Agency, the TUC expressed its concerns in a statement issued on Tuesday in Accra, highlighting the growing mistrust, especially between the EC and some political parties. The statement acknowledged the challenging task ahead for the Electoral Commission and appreciated the efforts made so far. It emphasized the need for the EC to maintain its independence and neutrality, underscoring its accountability to the citizens of Ghana.The TUC urged the EC to restore confidence in its processes by engaging with all political parties through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to ensure transparency and impartiality. The statement warned that a compromised electoral process could lead to chaos and stressed the importance of avoiding such situations.The government was also urged to provide the necessary resources to the EC to facilitate free and fair elections. Meanwhile, political parties were called upon to act with maturity and fairness, focusing on issues that unite rather than divide the nation. The TUC appealed to political leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric and language that could undermine national unity.Furthermore, the media was reminded of its responsibility to report responsibly, contributing to reducing tensions and promoting political stability. The TUC also called on security agencies to act decisively and neutrally, dealing with any attempts to disrupt peace within the legal framework.President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was urged to lead the country through a peaceful election period, following the precedent set by his predecessors. The statement highlighted the importance of peaceful elections as a significant achievement for the President's legacy in championi ng democracy and human rights.The TUC encouraged workers and their families to participate actively in the elections while resisting any incitement to violence. It reminded them that political engagement should not compromise peace, as improvements in job security and working conditions would not come through political violence.The TUC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to ensuring peaceful elections, pledging to monitor the process and hold accountable those who seek to undermine the will of the people or disrupt national peace.
