Trump Announces Shift in U.S. Africa Policy from Aid to Trade

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a significant shift in the United States' policy toward Africa, emphasizing a move "from aid to trade." Trump made this announcement during a meeting with leaders from five African nations at the White House on Wednesday.

According to Ghana News Agency, the leaders from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal were present at the meeting where Trump highlighted the "great economic potential in Africa." He indicated that the United States aims to "forge new economic opportunities involving both the United States and many African nations." Trump asserted that the transition from aid to trade would be "far more effective and sustainable and beneficial" in the long term.

In his remarks, Trump also hinted at a possible exemption for the five countries from the administration's plan to impose heightened reciprocal tariffs set to begin in August. The three-day mini-summit is expected to focus on expanding U.S. access to critical minerals and other natural resources in Africa, as indicated by media reports.
