Togbe Agyeman V Calls for Chieftaincy Reforms to Empower Chiefs

Accra: Togbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V has called on the government to implement chieftaincy reforms that will enable chiefs to penalize offending subjects for wrongdoing. He emphasized the role of traditional leaders as custodians of values that foster unity, peace, and development, and highlighted the need to address limitations in the chieftaincy institution concerning the application of traditional sanctions.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Dr. Gideon Quarcoo, Principal Elder of the Toh/Tovie Clan, and shared with the agency, Togbe Agyeman V condemned a recent murder case in his jurisdiction. He expressed support for the government's proposed reforms under President John Mahama, suggesting that the reforms should address gaps in the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), particularly outdated provisions in section 63.

Togbe Agyeman V extended condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the people of Mafi Adidome stand with them in mourning and in the quest for justice. He emphasized that these criminal incidents are isolated and do not reflect the true nature of the community.

Togbe Agyeman V reassured Ghanaians and the general public that Mafi Adidome remains a peaceful, hospitable, loving, law-abiding, business-friendly, and forward-looking community that welcomes all individuals, irrespective of their background or origin.
