Techiman: Mr Johnson Adom, the Techiman North Municipal Chief Executive in the Bono East region, has cautioned the public against the indiscriminate dumping and littering of plastic waste and materials, which he described as a significant threat to human development and the environment.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Adom emphasized the urgent need to address plastic pollution, calling it an emerging challenge for the nation. Speaking at a forum for the launch of the National Sanitation Day (NSD) in Tuobodom, the district capital, he highlighted the detrimental effects of plastic waste on ecosystems, water bodies, and rural landscapes, as well as its harmful impact on wildlife and human health.
Mr Adom urged residents to adopt better waste management practices and stressed the importance of recycling and reusing plastic materials. He noted that President John Dramani Mahama had reintroduced the NSD as a strategic move to align the nation with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in achieving clean water and sanitation. To support this vision, the Assembly plans to conduct monthly clean-up exercises.
Additionally, Mr Mohammed Manu Busi, the Techiman North District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), praised the NSD initiative for its role in promoting environmental sustainability. He encouraged school children and teachers to be mindful of their environmental impact and to refrain from littering.
