Sunyani Central Prison Launches Aquaculture and Poultry Projects to Enhance Inmate Nutrition and Skills

Sunyani: Superintendent Dennis Peasah, the Public Relations Officer of the Sunyani Central Prisons, has announced that the introduction of aquaculture and poultry projects is set to significantly enhance the nutritional value of inmates' diets at the facility. These initiatives aim not only to improve nutrition but also to foster skills development and generate sustainable revenue for the prison.

According to Ghana News Agency, Superintendent Peasah highlighted that the projects are being led by the Regional Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Thompson Otsyokpo. The focus is on the rehabilitation of inmates through practical training, equipping them with employable skills, and creating alternative income sources for the prison. Within the prison's premises, three fishponds have already been constructed as part of these efforts.

Superintendent Peasah noted that with assistance from the Bono Regional Fisheries Commission, a large earth pond capable of holding approximately 10,000 fish and two tarpaulin ponds are prepared to be stocked with fingerlings. Both inmates and officers have received training in fish farming techniques, including pond management, feeding, harvesting, and marketing, to effectively manage the facility.

Additionally, the central prison has embarked on a poultry project thanks to a donation of 200 birds and feeds from a philanthropist. The proceeds from both the poultry and aquaculture projects are expected to sustain the facility's operations and reduce its dependency on limited government feeding allocations for inmates.

Superintendent Peasah also emphasized that these projects align with the 'Wealth Creation and Welfare of Inmates' pillars of the 'Think Prisons 360 Degrees' reform programme. This initiative by the Ghana Prisons Service aims to transform prisons into centers of hope, healing, and productivity. Superintendent Peasah urged individuals, philanthropists, corporate institutions, and faith-based organizations to support this transformative programme.
