Success of Feed Ghana Programme Hinges on Farmer Cooperatives

Accra: Mr. Bright Demordzi, National Coordinator for the Feed Ghana Programme at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), has emphasized the pivotal role of farmer cooperatives in the effective execution of the 'Feed Ghana' initiative. He pointed out that the government's approach involves utilizing existing cooperative frameworks to ensure the programme's advantages reach all farmers, with a particular focus on smallholders.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Demordzi's comments were made at the Association of Ghana Industrial Summit and Exhibition (GISE) 2025. The event featured a high-level agribusiness session sponsored by the European Union (EU) in Ghana, titled 'Promoting Industrial Development of the Ghanaian Agribusiness Sector under the 24hr Economy Strategy.' This session was in line with the GISE 2025 theme, 'Unlocking Industrial Potential: Strategic Approaches of Ghana's Economic Transformation.'

The Summit facilitated in-depth policy discussions and included a presentation on the 'Grow24' strategy. This was followed by a roundtable panel discussion that brought together significant stakeholders from both public and private sectors. Mr. Demordzi highlighted that Ghana has approximately 62,000 cooperatives countrywide, which simplifies the mobilization of farmers necessary for the Feed Ghana Programme's rollout.

Mr. Demordzi further explained that the Ministry's strategy for the Feed Ghana Programme involves integrating all farmers into a robust cooperative system to promote the smooth exchange of information, technical expertise, and financial assistance. He indicated that by prioritizing effective communication and institutional capacity, the government aims to establish a productive agricultural sector that can underpin Ghana's industrial and economic transformation.

Mr. Jonas Claes, EU Delegation Charg© d'affaires, stated that the EU's involvement in the Summit highlighted their commitment to unlocking the potential of Ghana's agribusiness sector, which is vital for sustainable growth and job creation. He detailed the EU's support by expressing that through backing the Summit, the EU seeks to foster dialogue on how Ghana's key programmes, such as the 24-hour Economy, Grow24, and the Feed Ghana Programme, can be utilized to enhance productivity, increase value addition, and bolster Ghana's standing in the global market.
