Statistical-Data Hackathon Grand Finale Kicks Off in Accra.

Accra: The 2024 Statistical-Data Hackathon Grand Finale is currently underway in Accra, focusing on promoting innovative technologies, analytical procedures, and visualisations. This event utilises various datasets from the Statistical Online Bank (StatsBank) to provide data-driven evidence that can contribute to stabilising Ghana's development trajectory.According to Ghana News Agency, the three-day competition aims to optimise resources invested in data collection and avoid duplications by providing academics and researchers with easy access to diverse, nationally representative datasets. The event features participation from six technical universities: Accra Technical University, Koforidua Technical University, Takoradi Technical University, Sunyani Technical University, Bolgatanga Technical University, and Wa Technical University.Speaking at the event's opening ceremony, Dr Kobina Abaka Ansah, Assistant Chief Statistician of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), highlighted the underutilisation of data . He emphasised the need for practical application of existing data, leveraging the GSS's key products like census data and sample statistics to bridge the gap between university curricula and industry needs.Dr Ansah noted the involvement of students in this initiative is crucial for developing industry-aligned products. He mentioned that the Danish government sponsored a group of students to compete globally, showcasing their achievements during the African Statistics Day. He expressed optimism that the project would lead to the development of products meeting industry demands.Dr Francis Kweku Siripi, the National Coordinator of the Statistical-Data Hackathon, announced that the first-place winner would receive GHS20,000, the second-place winner GHS15,000, and the third-place winner GHS10,000, with all participants receiving medals. He also mentioned that participants would be recognised and awarded mentors for their guidance.Dr Siripi highlighted the talents of university students, who have developed impressive products during campus engagements. He stressed the need for participants to consolidate their ideas and develop innovative solutions to address national challenges within 36 hours.
