Sports and Recreation Minister Pays Courtesy Call on Asantehene

Kumasi: Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The visit was to express condolences following the tragic death of an Asante Kotoko supporter during a league match.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Minister, accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene and officials of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, visited the Palace after the death of Nana Yaw Frimpong, also known as 'Pooley'. Pooley was stabbed to death during a match between Kotoko and Nsoatreman F.C. on February 2.

The incident has had a profound impact on the football community, leading to the suspension of the Ghana Premier League. Mr. Adams assured the Asantehene of the Ministry's commitment to seek justice for the late supporter and to improve security at league venues to prevent similar occurrences.

Discussions also covered the state of Ghana football, particularly the underperformance of the Black Stars in recent years. The Asantehene, a passionate football supporter, offered strategies to rejuvenate the national teams and restore Ghana's status internationally.

Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the need to enhance security measures in stadiums to protect football fans.
