Speaker Bagbin Urges Ablekuma North MP to Uphold Constituency’s Trust

Accra: The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has advised Madam Ewurabena Aubynn, the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, to maintain her integrity and exercise caution in her decision-making process. During her swearing-in ceremony, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of self-reliance and the potential pitfalls of external influences.

According to Ghana News Agency, Speaker Bagbin encouraged Madam Aubynn to remain present, composed, and attentive to her colleagues, highlighting her role as the embodiment of hope for her constituents. He administered the Oath of Office and Oath of Allegiance to the new MP, presenting her with essential legislative documents, including the Parliamentary Standing Orders and the Constitution of Ghana.

Furthermore, Speaker Bagbin underscored the high expectations of the Ablekuma North populace, urging Madam Aubynn to prioritize their welfare. He remarked on the trust placed in her to enhance the community's quality of life, cautioning against any misuse of this responsibility.

Majority Leader Mr. Mahama Ayariga extended his congratulations to Madam Aubynn, noting the increase in the Majority Caucus's numbers within Parliament. He pointed out that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) now possesses a two-thirds majority, allowing for impactful decisions aimed at benefiting the citizenry. He assured the public of the Caucus's commitment to judiciously leveraging its majority.

In a contrasting development, the Minority Caucus opted to stage a walkout prior to the swearing-in. This action followed the Speaker's decision to deny their request to issue a preliminary statement, despite efforts by Minority Chief Caucus and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Mr. Frank Annor-Dompreh, to seek guidance on the matter.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary election has been mired in controversy since the December 7, 2024 elections. Electoral violence initially hindered the Electoral Commission (EC) from collating results, necessitating a re-run of 19 polling stations. In the re-run, NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Ak¹a Owusu Afriyie secured 33,881 votes, while Madam Ewurabena Aubynn attained victory with 34,090 votes. The re-run, however, was not devoid of political violence.
