Sege: Mr. Ernest Dugbanor Kugblenu, the Assembly Member for Sege-Koni Electoral Area in the Ada West District, has expressed concern over the growing number of robbery incidents in the Sege township and on major roads connecting the town to nearby communities. Mr. Kugblenu highlighted that theft, brutality, and other criminal activities are also on the rise.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kugblenu revealed in an interview that certain areas in Sege become unsafe after 19:00 hours, making it challenging for residents to move around. He mentioned that some residents have been attacked by armed robbers at gun or knife points while walking at night, losing valuables such as phones, motorbikes, and money.
Mr. Kugblenu further noted that heavy-duty trucks involved in the sand trade are frequently targeted by armed robbers on the Sege-Battor Road, which could impede the town’s development and promotion. Adding to the concerns, Madam Agnes, a trader, shared her experience of being ambushed by a knife-wielding attacker at the Sege Community Park at night, losing her phone and GHS 2,350.00 in sales.
Community members reported to Ghana News Agency that the police’s response to such incidents has been inadequate, with little effort made to apprehend the perpetrators, even when they are identifiable. Furthermore, arrested individuals are often seen the next day in the town, threatening those they suspect of reporting them.
In response, residents are urging the Inspector General of Police to take action, suggesting that officers be reshuffled if necessary, as some have become too familiar with the local populace.
