Reconstruction work begins on collapsed Aklakpa bridge

The reconstruction of the collapsed Aklakpa bridge at Sayikope in the Central Tongu district of the Volta Region has finally commenced, bringing relief to residents and commuters.The bridge, which connects the North and Central Tongu districts, collapsed last year, when an articulated truck carrying 600 bags of salt exceeded the 25-tonne weight limit, breaking the bridge and forcing the bridge to plunge into the river.The incident disrupted economic activities, transportation, and daily life for thousands of people.Following impassioned appeals from local leaders, including Mr Divine Osborne Fenu, the North Tongu District Chief Executive and Mr Moore Zonyrah, the Central Tongu District Chief Executive, the government has mobilized resources to rebuild the bridge.Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, the Assembly member of the Adidome electoral area, praised the government's swift response. 'We are grateful for the government's intervention. The bridge, when reconstructed, will revitalize economic activities, improv e transportation, and enhance the livelihoods of our people.'Mr Roland Apiani Mensah, the Project Supervisor of the Bridges Department at the Ghana Highways Authority, assured that the project would be completed within months.'We will engage local residents in the construction process, providing job opportunities and ensuring that the bridge is built to last,' he said.Mr Mensah explained that the new bridge will have improved structural integrity, enhanced safety features, and increased load capacity.Residents have expressed excitement and relief at the commencement of the reconstruction project.'This bridge is our lifeline.
