Rainstorm Leaves Over 200 Homeless in Twifo Atti-Morkwa District

Twifo Atti-Morkwa: A severe rainstorm that began on Sunday and continued into Monday has left more than 200 residents homeless across four communities in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region. The affected areas, Twifo Pimponso, Nsuakyire, Twifo 34, and Twifo Nuamakurom, experienced significant flooding, which caused road blockages and the collapse of numerous homes within hours.

According to Ghana News Agency, the aftermath of the storm has placed many community members in dire straits, forcing families to seek refuge in cocoa depots and church grounds. The situation has led to urgent calls for government intervention, with residents requesting supplies such as cement, roofing sheets, food, and mattresses.

Mr. John Tey, a cocoa farmer, reported that the heavy rainfall caused his three-bedroom home to collapse, and he is appealing for government assistance to recover from the disaster. Similarly, Madam Benedicta Dogbey, another farmer, suffered a total loss of her property. She described her situation as 'deeply mournful' and urgently requested government support to rebuild her home with roofing sheets and cement.

Mr. James Pra, the Twifo Atti Morkwa District NADMO coordinator, has reached out to traditional authorities, urging them to discourage the sale of land near rivers to mitigate future flooding risks. He also advised residents to exercise caution during the current rainy season, predicting it could be more severe than last year's, especially in communities throughout the Central region.
