Here follow key figures on the rabies and its epidemiological situation in Tunisia:- The number of people attacked by animals suspected of rabies was up from over 30,000 cases in 2010 to 42,000 cases in 2022, the Health Ministry said. Stray dogs are responsible for 31% of these attacks.- Tunisia logged six rabies-related deaths in 2010, against 5 in 2022. Over 43,000 people were vaccinated against rabies in 2023.- 355 cases of animal rabies were reported in 2023, against 250 in 2022, i.e. up 42%, according to figures provided by the Institut Pasteur.- The number of dogs (stray and domestic) will reach 520,000, Agriculture Minsitry estimates show.- The number of vaccinated owned dogs and cats reached 79.1% in 2023, according to the same source.- The World Health Organisation (WHO) said rabies causes tens of thousands of deaths every year, mainly in Asia and Africa, 40% of whom are children under 15 years of age.- Globally rabies causes an estimated cost of US$ 8.6 billion per year, says WHO.S ource: Agence Tunis Afrique Presse
