Bolgatanga: The Commercial Quarry Operators Association (COQUA) in Ghana has urged the government to reconsider the regulatory fees imposed on them, advocating for a conversion from dollars to Ghana Cedis to alleviate their operational costs.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Association made this appeal during a one-day refresher training program on best practices in quarry operations held in Bolgatanga. The event, themed 'Management and Best Practices in Quarry Operation', was organized by COQUA in collaboration with the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission. It gathered members of the Association from regions including Ashanti, North East, Upper East, and Upper West.
Alhaji Iddrisu Yeldza, Chairman of the Upper North branch of COQUA, highlighted that the fees in dollars imposed by the government are not only impacting their operational costs but also the growth potential of their businesses. He urged the government to consider switching the payment currency to Ghana Cedis.
He emphasized the importance of the quarry industry to the country's Gross Domestic Product, noting that government projects in infrastructure, such as roads, health, and education, heavily rely on the sector. Additionally, he encouraged investors to consider developing the Quarry Industry in the Sissala East and Sissala West Districts, citing the availability of raw materials and a ready market.
Mr. Jacob Labon, the Upper Quarry Manager, presented on the operational challenges faced by quarries, stressing the need for decentralizing the permit process. He noted that the current requirement to travel to Accra for permits is cumbersome and costly.
Ms. Georgina Dziwornu, Executive Secretary of the Association, urged members to maintain unity and cohesion to form a strong front for advocacy and lobbying. She lamented that despite COQUA's significant contributions to national growth, it remains underappreciated by the government, calling for greater inclusion in governmental policies and engagements.
