PURC Recoups Over GHS880,000 for Ghana Water Limited and Customers in Central Region

Cape coast: The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in the Central Region has successfully collected over GHS880,000 in compensations for Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and GHS47,000 for customers affected by billing errors. The significant recovery comes after GWL filed complaints regarding property damages primarily caused by road contractors.

According to Ghana News Agency, the compensations amounting to GHS880,109 were secured following two separate complaints lodged by GWL within the first half of the year. Additionally, PURC retrieved GHS47,713 from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for customers who were incorrectly billed.

Mr. Francis Baidoo, the Regional Manager of PURC, highlighted that while billing issues have been a challenge, the focus has shifted to service quality concerns. Customers have increasingly reported issues like power outages, low voltage, and wrongful disconnections.

The Commission's half-year report revealed that out of 621 complaints received, 594 were resolved, marking a 95.6% resolution rate. Complaints predominantly involved quality of service, with 514 against ECG and 100 against GWL.

In efforts to enhance awareness, PURC visited various institutions, educating approximately 9,592 citizens on consumer rights and responsibilities. Mr. Baidoo encouraged customers to report grievances, ensuring that most complaints are addressed effectively.

He noted significant damage to ECG infrastructure due to bush burning and theft, which contributed to power disruptions. GWL pipelines have also suffered damage from road construction activities, affecting water flow.

Mr. Baidoo advised individuals seeking electricity meters to acquire them directly from ECG offices, warning against third-party dealings. Plans are underway to establish consumer service committee offices in distant locations to improve service accessibility.
