Pupils in Nyanyano Commit to Combat Plastic Pollution and Promote Reusable Bags

Nyanyano: More than 80 pupils in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have pledged to fight plastic waste and promote the use of reusable bags in their communities. The commitment was made by pupils from four schools-Great Ebenezer Memorial School, Makiel Education Complex, Sea Breeze Preparatory School, and Perfect Bridge Academy-during a conference organized by Sankofa Second Cycle (SSC), a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental responsibility.

According to Ghana News Agency, SSC educated the pupils on the impact of plastic pollution on the environment. Queenstar Eduful, a pupil from Perfect Bridge Academy, expressed her intent to inform her community about the harmful effects of indiscriminate waste disposal. She highlighted the lack of a dedicated dump site in her community and emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal to prevent environmental harm.

Desmond Acquah, a student at Sea Breeze Preparatory School, shared his plan to encourage his peers and community members to return plastic bags to traders after use. He stressed the importance of reducing littering by opting not to take polythene bags or returning them after use.

Mr. Godsway Tek, the Supervising Director at SSC, outlined the organization's vision to raise awareness about plastic pollution among young people and involve them in the fight from an early age. He explained that the conference aimed to educate students on the dangers of plastic pollution and the opportunities in recycling and waste management.

Plastic pollution advocate Mr. Nathaniel Sagoe, speaking to the Ghana News Agency, emphasized the necessity of awareness creation, noting that although plastics were designed for convenience, they now pose significant risks to society.
