Progressive Intellectuals Condemn Post-Election Lawlessness, Call for Enhanced Security Measures

ACCRA: The Progressive Intellectuals (PI) have issued a strong condemnation of the recent lawlessness following the announcement of Ghana's 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary election results. The group, composed of academics and intellectuals from various Ghanaian universities, has expressed deep concern over incidents of looting and vandalism targeting state institutions.According to Ghana News Agency, PI's statement, signed by President Professor Yunus Dumbe, highlights the proliferation of social media and mainstream media footage depicting acts of hooliganism. The group characterizes these events as indicative of a broader trend of lawlessness taking root in the nation. The statement underscores the inadequacy of current security measures, citing a leadership void within both political and security sectors that has left state institutions exposed to these attacks. The PI criticized the effectiveness of security agencies, noting that while significant resources were deployed to election collation cent ers, insufficient measures were taken to deter post-election criminal activities. Despite calls from both the outgoing President and the President-elect for the youth to desist from violence and vandalism, the PI observed that these activities have continued unabated, exacerbating the country's insecurity.Furthermore, the PI lamented the political blame game that has ensued, with various parties attributing the unrest to their opponents. The group emphasized that criminal acts should not be politicized and urged that political differences should not obscure the need for a unified response to restore order. In response to the ongoing unrest, the PI has called upon all Ghanaians to actively participate in safeguarding their communities. The group recommends the formation of community sub-committees tasked with monitoring and protecting public assets, thereby helping to restore security and prevent further criminal exploitation of the current situation.
