Prestea: Mr Matthew K. Ayeh, the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has led a security team to conduct a raid on an illegal mining site at Bobow Woketa, near Appiatse, in the Western Region. Acting on a tip-off received through the Anti-Galamsey Rapid Response Line, Mr Ayeh, together with the Municipal Police Commander, swiftly moved to close the site.

According to Ghana News Agency, the illegal miners fled the scene upon the team’s arrival. The team seized a washing plant, and an excavator, and destroyed a makeshift wooden shelter used by the illegal miners. Mr Ayeh stated that the devastation was done by some Chinese nationals with the help of some Ghanaians. ‘They took to their heels when they saw us, but they have left behind an excavator and we are making arrangements to move it out of this site,’ he said.

He reaffirmed the Assembly’s zero tolerance for illegal mining and urged residents to be vigilant and report any form of such activities to the security team for action. ‘We will not relent on our efforts to safeguard our lands and water bodies. Anyone engaging in galamsey in this municipality should take this as a warning,’ the MCE stated.
