Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to cherish the nation's prevailing peace, despite the challenges it faces, emphasising that peace is essential for sustaining democracy and advancing development.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama highlighted the significance of peace during the maiden National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the State House in Accra to mark Republic Day. He reflected on the conflicts and instability observed across the African continent and the world, contrasting this with Ghana's status as an "oasis of peace." The President stressed that such peace should not be taken for granted.
President Mahama attributed the country's peaceful state to the consistent prayers of religious bodies. He noted that the peace enjoyed by Ghana is not solely the result of sound policy or political will, but also the outcome of persistent intercession by faithful believers for the nation's welfare.
Commending the harmony among religious groups, President Mahama described it as "a precious gift" that must be safeguarded. He cautioned against tribalism, religious intolerance, and political hostility, urging citizens to embrace a language of peace, compassion, and mutual respect. The President emphasized the importance of building bridges rather than barriers, reminding Ghanaians of their shared identity and destiny.
In his address, President Mahama also called for a national recommitment to virtues such as honesty, love, and service. He stated that the true measure of a nation's greatness lies in qualities like courage, discipline, sacrifice, and compassion. It is through these virtues, he added, that Ghana will find its true strength and achieve prosperity.
