Juaboso: President John Dramani Mahama has assured cocoa farmers of his administration's commitment to remunerate them with 70 per cent of the world market price of cocoa. He emphasized that the labor of the nation's cocoa farmers merits dignity and equitable compensation. The President delivered this message at Juaboso during a durbar with the Chiefs and People of the Western North Region as part of his Thank You Tour.
According to Ghana News Agency, this nationwide tour aims to express gratitude to Ghanaians for their overwhelming support during the 2024 general election. President Mahama acknowledged the Western North Region's pivotal role in cocoa production, stating, "When it comes to cocoa production, Western North is a leader. Indeed, the people of this region are the backbone of Ghana's cocoa production." He also recognized the challenges faced by cocoa farmers, including low prices, insufficient extension services, and delays in the distribution of cocoa inputs.
The President announced plans to restructure the cocoa rehabilitation program, particularly in Bia and Juaboso areas, where issues like swollen shoots and aging trees have significantly impacted cocoa yields. Under new leadership at the Ghana Cocoa Board, the government intends to prioritize the distribution of improved seeds, regular extension support, and proper compensation for rehabilitated cocoa farms.
Addressing the nation's youth, President Mahama explained that the Government's Feed Ghana Programme is designed for them, offering services like land preparation, irrigation systems, youth block farms, and guaranteed market linkages. He assured support for any young person interested in agriculture, regardless of their background.
The President also expressed concern over environmental degradation in areas like Awaso, Dadieso, and Sewfi Ahwiaso, primarily due to illegal mining. Calling it a national emergency, he stated that the National Task Force would persist in its efforts to cease illegal mining activities in forest reserves and water bodies. Furthermore, he addressed issues with illegal anti-Galamsey task forces extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining companies and has instructed authorities to arrest and prosecute those involved.
In response to security threats and border-related crimes, President Mahama announced the establishment of a forward operating base of the Ghana Armed Forces in Punikrom, as requested by local authorities. He reiterated the importance of peace as a fundamental condition for development.
