President Mahama Lauded for Military Training Initiative in National Service Scheme

Takoradi: The Western Nzema Youth League (WNYL), a youth group, has expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama's decision to incorporate a short military training course into the National Service Scheme (NSS). This initiative was announced during President Mahama's inaugural State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he emphasized the need to instil fitness and discipline among the youth through this program.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Patrick Ekye Kwesie, leader of the WNYL, stated in an interview that the military training program would empower young individuals to realize their potential and actively contribute to nation-building. He highlighted that the emphasis on discipline, resilience, and teamwork would prepare the youth to face future challenges and contribute to society in a meaningful way.

Dr. Kwesie further noted that the introduction of military training for national service personnel marks a crucial step towards fostering national pride and responsibility among the youth. He believes this initiative will instil values such as patriotism, respect for authority, and a commitment to service. In regions like Western Nzema, where unemployment is prevalent and opportunities are limited, this training could offer a transformative experience for many young people.

Dr. Kwesie added that the government's decision to implement such a program for the youth is commendable. He emphasized that military training on one's resume could distinguish individuals, showcasing their ability to work under pressure, lead teams, and adapt to challenging situations.

President John Dramani Mahama delivered his State of the Nation Address on February 27, marking his first since taking office on January 7, 2025. The address was conducted in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
