President Mahama Announces Fund to Support Children of Helicopter Tragedy Victims

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of a government initiative to support the educational needs of the children of the eight victims who perished in the August 6, 2025, helicopter tragedy. The announcement came during the Islamic funeral (adua) for Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Deputy National Security Coordinator and one of the victims.

According to Ghana News Agency, the President expressed the profound loss faced by the families, highlighting the responsibilities left behind by those who perished. Many of the victims' children are still in school, with some as young as two months old, including the child of the pilot.

To ensure that these children do not suffer due to the untimely demise of their parents, the government plans to set up a fund. President Mahama mentioned that the details of this initiative would be shared during a state funeral scheduled for Friday, August 15th. This fund will provide an opportunity for those who wish to contribute towards the future of these children.

President Mahama reflected on the period of mourning and emphasized the need to transition to acceptance, quoting the Quran to provide solace. He also praised Alhaji Limuna for his dedication and hard work, noting his personal loss in losing a close aide. Limuna, recently appointed as Deputy National Security Coordinator, had embarked on his first public assignment when the tragedy occurred.

The helicopter crash claimed the lives of several prominent Ghanaians, including Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Alhaji Dr. Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central. Other victims were Mr. Samuel Sarpong, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of continuing the government's reset agenda in honor of the deceased, ensuring their efforts and sacrifices were not in vain.
