Portugal’s Leaders Honor Footballer Jota and Brother After Tragic Accident

Portugal: Portugal's President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and Prime Minister Lus Montenegro, have paid their last respects to national team and Liverpool player, Diogo Jota, and his brother, Andr© Silva, who died early Thursday in a road accident.

According to Ghana News Agency, Rebelo de Sousa and Montenegro traveled to the brothers' hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, on Friday, where the wake was held in a chapel. They laid wreaths and condoled with the relatives of the brothers.

Family members and close friends of the deceased had been gathering since the morning for the traditional wake, which was also due to open for the public later in the day. In Portugal, the wake usually takes place the day before the funeral. The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, and Jota and Silva will then be laid to rest.

The Portuguese parliament observed a minute of silence for the two on Friday. Jota and Silva, who was also a footballer, died early Thursday in Spain. It is believed that a tire of their car blew up while they were overtaking another vehicle on a highway, causing the car to veer off the road, hit a barrier, and go up in flames.
