Accra: Political leaders in Ghana have been urged to prioritize climate-smart agricultural interventions to address food security concerns. Mr. George Opare Asare, a Climate Change Expert, emphasized the importance of subsidizing solar irrigation and promoting drought-resistant crops as part of sustainable farming practices that can boost resilience to climate change.According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Opare Asare highlighted the challenges faced by farmers due to unpredictable weather patterns, which create uncertainty regarding optimal planting times, leading to failed harvests and increased food insecurity. In a joint statement with EcoClub 360, Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), and the Embassy of Denmark in Ghana, he called on political leaders to adopt practical solutions that would ensure food security for future generations.As Ghanaian voters prepare for the upcoming elections on December 7, Mr. Asare underscored the importance of considering climate change issues when casting th eir votes. He pointed out that the nation is at a crucial juncture, facing not only political decisions but also environmental challenges such as rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and devastating floods.Mr. Asare advocated for investments in renewable energy, climate-resilient agriculture, and community adaptation programs. He also encouraged voters to contribute to environmental sustainability through actions like tree planting, waste management, and reducing single-use plastics, highlighting the role of education in influencing long-term change.The expert emphasized the need for climate-conscious leadership, citing examples of communities across Ghana affected by climate change. From erratic rains impacting farmers in the north to shop owners in Accra facing losses due to floods, and families in Keta losing their homes to coastal erosion, he stressed the urgency for leaders to prioritize solutions such as robust drainage systems and green urban planning.In his call to action, Mr. Asare urge d voters to choose leaders committed to sustainability, thereby shaping a future where Ghana can thrive in harmony with nature.
