Accra: Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako and his wife Mouha have been reinvited by the police shortly after being discharged by an Accra circuit court. The couple was requested to accompany police personnel to the station on Monday, February 17, following the court proceedings.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Accra Circuit Court had earlier struck out the case against Bishop Salifu Amoako and two others. The case involved an October 12, 2024, accident in East Legon that resulted in two fatalities. The decision to withdraw the case came after the Attorney General's representatives petitioned the court, citing the need for further police investigations to determine the next steps in the prosecution.
The State Attorney expressed the necessity for the police to conduct additional inquiries, stating, "As such we are before you this morning to withdraw the charge sheet against the three accused persons. Humbly submitted." The defense counsel indicated no objection to the withdrawal, hoping for a nolle prosequi.
Presiding over the case, Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah acknowledged that if the Attorney General, who initially filed the case, now seeks its withdrawal and the defense supports it, the court has no opposition. Consequently, the court granted the request, and the matter was struck out, leading to the discharge of Bishop Salifu Amoako, Mouha Amoako, and Linda Bempah.
The accused were initially charged for allowing their underage son, 16-year-old Elrad Salifu, to drive without a license. They pleaded not guilty and were granted bail. The charges stemmed from an accident where Elrad allegedly drove a white Jaguar F-Pace Sports, without a valid license, resulting in a collision with an Acura Utility Vehicle. The accident tragically resulted in the deaths of two individuals on October 12, 2024.
Linda Bempah, a personal assistant to Mouha, was also implicated for allegedly giving the car keys to the teenager. The collision occurred on Dzanie Shaie Street, causing both vehicles to crash into a wall and burst into flames. The occupants of the Acura, Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoah Boateng, both aged 12, were trapped and perished in the fire.
Elrad and other occupants were hospitalized at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. Subsequently, on December 19, 2024, a Juvenile Court sentenced Elrad to six months in a Correctional Home, with an undertaking not to drive until age 18, among other conditions.
